TOW #2 – Visual Text: Casanova The Movie (Trailer)
Casanova is a movie that was released on
September 3, 2005 by Touchstone Pictures.
Casanova is a movie about a
young Casanova battling the authority in Venice and his own personality to try
to win over a rebellious young woman who writes pamphlets about women’s rights
and her distaste for Casanova.
Although this rendition is based more on the myth surrounding Casanova
then his actual person it still applies many true characteristics of his life
like his time spent in Venice as well as his troubles with authority and the
church. Casanova stars Heath Ledger as Casanova, who was a prominent actor
at the time, which boosts the appeal for viewers to go and see the movie. Touchstone’s purpose in creating this
trailer is to encourage their audience to go and see the movie. Touchstone Pictures’s audience is
anyone who enjoys movies, or more specifically romantic or humorous movies.
I believe this trailer does a
wonderful job of appealing to the audience’s emotions. The trailer does this by hooking the
audience in the beginning with the beat of the drum in sync with action shots
of Heath Ledger and then by showing the ironic chemistry between Casanova and
Francesca Bruni. The trailer
capitalizes on the irony of the movie, this being that Francesca is a 18th
century woman’s rights actives while Casanova is the living synonym of
“womanizer”, to appeal to pathos.
This rhetorical device is a way to appeal to the viewer’s own inner
emotions in a way that only irony can.
This appeal applies to almost everyone because it appeals to romance
which is an event and emotion experienced by almost everyone at least once in
their lives. By appealing to
pathos in this way I was even encouraged to see this movie for myself and I
know that I am not alone.
