IRB Intro #3: Plato, The Republic
The
Book that I have chosen for this marking period’s IRB is The Republic, written by Plato in 380 BC. This book is a Socratic dialogue, one of his 36 Socratic
dialogues, and details “Justice” not only in the definition of its self but
also its embodiment in a man and in an ideal city-state. Plato is known for his philosophy, his
brilliant mind, for teaching his famed student Aristotle and his works are
often used to explain rhetoric, complex English and philosophical topics, as
well as religion and mathematics. The
idea of a just city-state and Benevolent dictator drew me to this book because it
is a philosophy that was/Is embodied by the leadership of Cincinnatus in Rome
and Lee Kuan Yew in modern day Singapore, two individuals I greatly admire.
