TOW #6 Visual Text/Merlin

TOW #6 Visual Text/Merlin

This visual text is an advertisement for Merlin “Medical Emergency Relief International” a British international health charity, which uses donated money to send doctors, surgeons and other medical professionals to global emergencies to try to save lives as well as to build up that area’s local health services.  Merlin’s main purpose in creating this visual is to generate funds, through donations, for aiding the civilians caught up in the current Syrian Civil War.  This war has been fought for more then two years now between Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the many rebel groups that have sprung up in the country.   Such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA), the Kurds, a number of Terrorist organizations and many other rebel groups.  Merlin does an excellent job in targeting its audience (your average sympathetic individual) into conveying the hardship in Syria utilizing a strong appeal to logos.
Merlin is able to appeal to logos by the use of statistics in it’s visual.  By stating the number of Syrians that have died and the number that have been displaced Merlin is able to display to the audience the scale of the Syrian Civil War.  Merlin then explains the damage done to Syria’s medical infrastructure through more statistics such as the 78% destruction of ambulances and the 56% damaged hospitals.  Following these harsh facts Merlin then appeals to pathos by changing the background color to a warmer orange/yellow and by stating in bold face the “Merlin is a force for health.”  Merlin also gives the audience a chance to make a difference by displaying their contact information and followed by a catchy slogan “Text HELP to 70123 to donate 5-euros.”
This advertisement made by Merlin does an excellent job using facts, statistics and the use of contrasting color tone to generated funds, through donations, to send medical aid to the Syrian people.
